A10 THE TAGS NEWS Thursday, Sept. 26,1991 Cemetery controversy continues; Squires may be moved again By Rick Romanclto The Taos News Beverly Armyo is tenaciously pursuing her efforts to re-establish the dignity of the dead at Kit Carson Cemetery, That effort, however, is creating a stir among local authorities and members of the community. During the recent burial of a body, said to be that of Josie Carson Squires, daughter of legendary mountain man Kit Carson, the remains of an unidentified man who occupied the same plot were removed. The Squires burial proceeded, and the man's remains were sent to the state medical examiner's office in Albuquerque for tests to determine age and possible identity. Squires, who was buried in Las Vegas for nearly a century, was brought to Taos for burial in the Carson cemetery by Roger Hokanson at the expense of Bent Masonic Lodge 42 on July 20.

Armijo alleges that during the relocation of Squires remains at least one state statute was violated and the sanctity of the Carson cemetery was compromised. 'They have absolutely no right to say who has the right to be buried there," Armijo said. "To remove this man who was buried there by his family more than 100 years ago and then to say that, because she's a Carson, she can be buried there is wrong." Armijo said she is demanding that Squires be exhumed once more, for a fourth time. She said she wants the "John Doe" body to be buried back where it was found, and for Squires' body to be reburied somewhere else in the Carson cemetery. "If they dig another grave and there's an- other body, dig another grave until they can find a vacancy for her or bury her outside the cemetery.

The city can do that, it's their land. But he has to go back where he was, that's his place," Armijo said. Statute 30-12-12 "states they are not to disturb the remains of a body, whether in a grave site, whether in a public area, it doesn't matter, they're not supposed to disturb them without due process," Armijo said. But Lynn Sanchez of the N.M. Department of Vital Statistics said the Masons obtained the proper permit.
